SMITHFIELD – The NC SBI is investigating the death of an inmate at Johnston Correctional on Highway 70 near Smithfield. On January 10, 2021, offender Glenn Witte Stickler was 
found dead. The 66 year-old man had been in prison custody since 1987 serving a life sentence for first degree murder
Brad Deen, Communications Officer for the NC Department of Public Safety, said the NC State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death as it does commonly for in-custody deaths when requested. Because of the ongoing internal and SBI investigation, no additional details are being released at this time.
Stickler was convicted of murder in Buncombe County in 1987.
