The Selma Police Department is alerting residents of a scam using their name.
On Thursday, someone called a Selma resident claiming to be a Selma police officer. They were able to ‘spoof’ the caller ID and it appeared the number came from the Selma police station at 919-965-8189, when in fact it did not.
Police Captain Jamie Hughes said the caller claimed the citizen had a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear in court. They could retract the arrest warrant if a payment was made by telephone.
“We will never call and ask for money to avoid being arrested,” Captain Hughes told WTSB News.
Police want citizens to know about the scam, especially since the calls appear to come from the police department telephone number. If you receive one of these calls, simply hang up and notify police.
