School Board Heads Toward New Attendance Districts

At its monthly meeting Tuesday evening, Johnston’s Board of Education got a schedule for moving toward adoption of revised school-attendance districts by the end of this calendar year. That would give parents and students ample notice of changes prior to the opening of two new schools: Swift Creek Elementary next summer, Wilson’s Mills High School the following year.

Mike Miller of N.C. State University’s Operations Research and Education Laboratory (OREd) – which advises Johnston’s school system on facilities planning – laid out a six-month plan for redrawing districts. His staff will present preliminary boundary adjustments to the school board in August, “community engagement” including public meetings and online portals will follow in September, with a final recommendation coming to the board in October followed by adoption of the redistricting plan in November.

It will be implemented over a two-year period starting when Swift Creek Elementary opens next summer, Mr. Miller said. “The plan will not satisfy everybody,” he warned. However, “we’re not going to move families twice,” he emphasized.

Mr. Miller pointed out that the redistricting plan will be based on a countywide review of existing boundaries. Beyond attendance districts for the two new schools, planners will also consider the impact of revised districts in light of new additions at Benson Elementary and Cooper Academy in Clayton as well as a proposed classroom addition at Cleveland High, he noted.

  1. Wait, didn’t they give brooks a big raise and yet the school system hires someone to advise on facilities? One of them is a waste of money…..or both

  2. Once these guys start making all this money they then hire someone else to do their work while they sit back and act like the big boss

  3. Facilities planning and boundary planning are two different planning modules. Ored does the long range population estimates based on future developments in the county.

    • You don’t need to hire an outside agency to see where the county is growing the fastest. Plus, all you have to do is look at HS, Middle and elementary attendance numbers to see what schools need relief…..sheeesh it’s an easy job. I’ll do it for half what ored is getting paid.

  4. Mr. Paul Thornton, Mr. Stupid, and Mr. A Fullwood just calm down and take it easy!!! The Andrews Family with thier Tax and Spend operation has plenty of extra millions of dollars thanks to the Tax Office under the leadership of Sister Jocelyn Andrews by following our progressive liberal counties such as Mecklenburg, Durham and Wake counties and by moving your homes property revalution from every eight years to every four years capsuring those jacked up values four consecutive years earlier. Now our school board chairwoman Ma’ Lyn Andrews is only going after what everyone knows is there to get. Those extra tax dollars that Sister Joceyln Andrews has hauled in by jacking those property values up four years earlier. Our State law requires revaluation only every eight years. GREAT JOB LADIES!!! Now let our school board use these extra dollars the way Mr. Brooks has done so we don,t we lose these dollars!!! Everyone knows this is a use it or lose it government operation!!! We have the right people in the right places, The Andrews!!!
