The Johnston County Board of Commissioners launched their search Wednesday for a new District 6 commissioner.  On Tuesday, Commissioner Keith Branch of Smithfield announced his resignation effective September 30th.

Branch, 53, who has served on the board only 9 months, said he has accepted a new job that will require more of his time and will prevent him from devoting the necessary resources to continue to serve in the elected position.

Today, the board announced they would accept applications for the vacancy through Friday, September 29th at 5:00PM.

To be eligible a person must be a member of the Republican Party and be a resident in District 6, which includes Wilson’s Mills, Pine Level and sections of North and West Smithfield.  The term will expire in November 2020.

Under state law the vacancy must be filled within 60 days.
