Search Underway For Reckless Driver Who Caused Fatal Crash

A woman died Thursday afternoon in Johnston County after being forced off the roadway by a reckless driver. Troopers are searching for the vehicle that caused the accident, which never stopped.

Fatal - I-95 92mm, 05-27-16CPAround 4:36 pm, troopers said 63 year-old Wilma Jean Lewis of Fayetteville was traveling in a silver Hyundai northbound on I-95 between Smithfield and Four Oaks.  Near the 92 mile marker just south of the Brogden Road bridge, a witness said a white newer model Nissan passenger car, possibly a 2013 or 2014 model, with a Florida license plate was also traveling northbound. The Nissan, traveling at a high rate of speed, moved to the left to pass, then back into the right lane, forcing Lewis to swerve to the right to avoid being hit by the speeding car as it entered her travel lane.

Lewis lost control of her Hyundai which careened off the interstate and struck a tree head-on. She died at the scene. The driver of the white Nissan that caused the fatal crash never stopped.

Troopers said a witness to the accident stopped at the scene and provided information on the suspect vehicle.

Anyone who may have witnessed the fatal crash or saw the speeding white Nissan is asked to contact the NC Highway Patrol.
