Update: Driver Charged In Fatal Hit And Run

CLAYTON – The State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash this morning on the Highway 70 Clayton Bypass. The accident was reported at 1:28am Thursday.

Troopers said a red moped was traveling eastbound on Highway 70 near Cornwallis Road and Highway 42. A blue passenger car, possibly a Volkswagen Jetta, struck the moped from behind and continued traveling east on Highway 70.  The moped and operator traveled off the right side of the roadway after the impact. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  Their name has not been released.

Parts from the blue vehicle were left scattered at the scene but the driver did not stop.  The car may have substantial damage to the right front.
