A fire heavily damaged a building Saturday night in Smithfield, a short distance away from where a commercial office burned three nights earlier.
Around 10pm Saturday, fire fighters responded to a large out building that caught fire behind residence at 522 North Seventh Street. Smithfield Fire Chief John Blanton said the blaze appears to have started outside the building. There was no electricity connected to the building. No injuries were reported.
Around 11pm Wednesday, a fire caused significant damage to a commercial building at 714 Wilkins Street. The building was vacant but was in the process of being remodeled. Officials said the fire was accidental and appeared to have been electrical related.
The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating both fires. On Monday, Paul Whitehurst, Assistant Director of Johnston County Emergency Services said the Wilkins Street fire was accidental and the two fires are not linked.
