SMITHFIELD – Johnston County Public Utilities have reported a second wastewater spill in less than a month, both in the same area. The latest incident was reported Thursday.
Between October 4-5, in the vicinity of 680 County Home Road, off NC Highway 210, approximately 518,400 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into an unnamed tributary to Middle Creek. The discharge was blamed on a pipeline material failure.
Previously, we reported about a spill that occurred between September 18-21, in the same area. About 237,600 gallons of partially treated wastewater and fully treated reclaimed water spilled and flowed into an unnamed tributary to Middle Creek. That incident was caused by a manhole overflow.
The NC Division of Water Resources was immediately notified of both events and is reviewing the matter.
