Fire Chief Phillip McDaniel said the new Cadet Program would support the Fire Technology Program at Smithfield Selma High School.  Johnston County Public Schools has started a Fire Technology Program at SSS High and Clayton High. It will allow students who enroll to have all the necessary classes to be certified as a firefighter and emergency medical technician when they graduate from high school.

Chief McDaniel said the cadet program would support the school systems fire program as well as help recruit firefighters for the department.

The fire department staff is still finalizing guidelines for the cadet program.

McDaniel said the program would serve not only as a recruiting tool but as a way to demonstrate the department’s commitment to the SSS program.
