Selma Man Arrested After 100 MPH Chase

SELMA — A Selma man wanted on outstanding drug charges was arrested by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office following a high-speed pursuit that reportedly reached speeds of 100 mph.

According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy on routine patrol around 11:17 a.m. Jan. 23 recognized John Joseph Brinchek III, 57, of Jerry Road behind the wheel of a 2012 Ford SUV on Old Beulah Road.

The deputy knew Brinchek was wanted on outstanding warrants issued by the Kenly Police Department and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Investigators said Brinchek failed to stop for blue lights and siren and accelerated, leading deputies on a pursuit that reached speeds of 100 mph. Brinchek eventually ran off the rural roadway before reentering the highway, slowing down, turning onto Old Route 22 and coming to a stop.

Brinchek was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane control and simple possession of a controlled substance.

He was also served with Kenly Police Department warrants obtained Jan. 21 charging him with felony possession of a controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brinchek was held on a $30,000 bond for the charges stemming from the pursuit, with an additional $20,000 bond on the Kenly drug warrants.

No injuries were reported. The SUV was seized under North Carolina’s Run and Done law.
