Passing motorists were assuming the worst when they saw Smithfield and Selma firefighters dressed out in oxygen masks and climbing gear looking into a manhole on Anderson Street and other locations.
Luckily there was no emergency.
It was a scheduled routine inspection of major sewer lines in Selma.
