Selma Woman Seriously Injured In Smithfield Crash

A Selma woman sustained serious injuries in a two car accident Saturday morning on US 70 (Market Street) in the Smithfield city limits.

Smithfield Police said the accident occurred on US 70 at Interstate 95 at 10:19am.

Police said Maria Gomez LaVerde of Akron, Ohio had exited off I-95 in her 2017 Hyundai and was preparing to make a left turn at a stop sign. LaVerde pulled directly into the path of a 2005 Suzuki traveling eastbound on US70 and being driven by Carol Heath Ennis of Ricks Road, Selma.

Ennis sustained serious injuries in the collision including broken bones, according to police. She was taken to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield. LaVerde was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Police estimated damage to the vehicles at $10,000 each. Officer D.A. Sholes investigated the collision.
