RALEIGH – Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) announced Tuesday that he intends to appoint Sen. Benton Sawrey (R-Johnston) to the following committees: Education, Health Care, Judiciary, State and Local, and Health and Human Services Appropriations.
“Committees are an integral part of what the legislature does. The committee meetings allow for debate, compromise, and public input, to produce legislation that becomes law, Sen. Berger said. “I want to thank Sen. Sawrey for being willing to bring his expertise to these committees. I look forward to seeing the work Sen. Sawrey does this session on behalf of his district and all North Carolinians.”
Sen. Sawrey said, “It is a great honor to represent the people of Johnston County. I have extensive experience working with our community college system and serving on the Education Committee is a natural fit. A quality education opens a world of opportunities for our children and helps attract good jobs to a district. Great teachers and involved parents create the leaders of tomorrow. I want to ensure that local communities are in the driver’s seat when it comes to our kids.”
Sen. Sawrey was also enthusiastic about being a member of the Health Care Committee. “Access to affordable and quality healthcare for rural citizens is a top priority. Johnston County was recently designated a health care desert for primary care, dental, and mental health. That’s simply unacceptable. Folks get up every day and work hard to pay for their healthcare,” he said. “I want to make sure that their interests are at the forefront.”
Sen. Sawrey was recently elected to his first term in the Senate representing Johnston County.
With the good Senator on the Health committee, maybe we can finally see the repealing of Certificate of Need have some real traction.
I’m just hoping he’ll support NC joining the Convention of States.
