Senator Sawrey Named Co-Chair Of Legislative Life Sciences Caucus

RALEIGH — State Senator Benton Sawrey (R – Johnston) has been named co-chair of the North Carolina General Assembly’s bipartisan Life Sciences Caucus, a legislative group focused on supporting and advancing the life sciences industry across the state. Rep. Donna White (R – Johnston) is a fellow co-chair from the North Carolina House of Representatives.

“I am honored to take on this leadership role as co-chair of the Life Sciences Caucus,” said Senator Sawrey. “North Carolina is a national leader in biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, and medical innovation. As co-chair, I am committed to ensuring our policies reflect the importance of this industry to our economy, our healthcare system, and our future workforce.”

The Life Sciences Caucus brings together lawmakers from both chambers and both parties to collaborate with industry leaders, research institutions, and educational partners. The goal is to promote job creation, strengthen supply chains, and foster innovation in fields ranging from precision medicine to agricultural biotechnology.

Senator Sawrey, who represents Johnston County, emphasized the strategic importance of the life sciences sector to rural and suburban communities.

“This is about creating high-quality jobs, supporting STEM education, and ensuring that innovation benefits all North Carolinians,” he added.

With more than 800 life sciences companies operating in North Carolina and over 75,000 employees statewide, the sector continues to be one of the fastest-growing economic engines in the state.

“I look forward to working alongside my colleagues in the General Assembly and with our private and public partners to keep North Carolina at the forefront of life sciences advancement,” said Sawrey.

Senator Sawrey represents North Carolina’s 10th Senate District, covering Johnston County. A lifelong resident and practicing attorney, he serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health Care, and the Committee on Appropriations – Health & Human Services. He also sits on key committees including Appropriations/Base Budget, Elections, Judiciary, and Rules. Deeply rooted in his community, Senator Sawrey brings a strong legal background and a practical approach to advancing the values and priorities of his district.
