Johnston County Commissioners have proclaimed this week, September 8th – 14th, 2019, as Firefighters Week in Johnston County.
Each week containing September 11th is also recognized as Firefighters Week in North Carolina.
Fighting fires is one of the most hazardous professions requiring physical strength, stamina, extensive training, courage and selfless concern for the welfare of others. Firefighters make scarifies to protect the lives and financial interests of the residents of Johnston County. They respond to emergencies without hesitation.
There are currently 24 fire departments, 31 fire houses, and nearly 1,100 firefighters in Johnston County. About 90 percent of the firefighters in Johnston County are volunteers.
In 2018, they responded to 21,325 calls for service including 12,349 fire calls and 8,976 first responders calls.
In the proclamation, County Commissioners said firefighters deserve to be honored for the invaluable service they provide to the county, citizens, and communities.
