A traffic accident Wednesday left a woman pinned inside her overturned SUV, a busy highway shut down, and caused several hundred homes to lose power.
Around 10:30am, an SUV ran off Highway 210 near Swift Creek Road outside of Smithfield and collided with a utility pole. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle, under the downed power lines, for about 45 minutes before being freed.
The Smithfield, Four Oaks and Wilson’s Mills Fire Departments worked to free the victim. Duke Energy crews also responded to the scene to secure the power lines and pole.
Approximately 214 homes in the area lost power due to the accident. Highway 210 was completely shut down and traffic was detoured around the accident.
The driver was rushed to Wake Medical Center for treatment. There were no other occupants in the vehicle. Photos by John Payne
