Highway 42 near the Johnston-Wilson County line was shut down for several hours Thursday morning following a near head-on collision.
The accident was reported at 5:53am. One vehicle appears to have crossed the centerline in a sweeping curve and collided with a second vehicle.
One person was pinned in the wreckage for about 40 minutes before being extricated. The victim was airlifted from the scene by a Wake Medical Center helicopter. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital. The condition of the two drivers was not immediately released.
Highway 42 was completely shut down for several hours while state troopers investigated the crash and the wreckage was cleaned up. The NC Department of Transportation set up barricades and helped detour traffic. Photos by John Payne
