Smithfield Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault. The incident was reported Friday in the South Smithfield area.
Police said the victim, in her 30’s, was transported to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield where she was treated and released.
Captain R. Sheppard told WTSB News on Monday the victim knew the offender and the assault was not random. Captain Sheppard said the case had been assigned to the detective’s division and officers were actively following up on several leads in the case.
