Sheriff: Children Found Living In “Horrible And Unsanitary Conditions” During Drug Raid
BENSON – Two people are facing felony charges following a drug raid in the Benson city limits. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Narcotics Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at 301 E. Holmes Street, Friday morning. The residence is less than four blocks from Benson Town Hall.
Deputies said they found suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, and numerous items of drug paraphernalia. Officers said they located evidence the home was a place where illegal narcotics was being used and sold.
JCSO agents reportedly found marijuana that had been stored in the children’s bedroom closet.
Two children lived in the dilapidated home with their mother. They were in school when the search warrant was served.
Due to the unsafe and unsanitary conditions, which reportedly included pet feces and urine throughout the home, multiple hypodermic needles, and an exposed electrical panel, the Johnston County Building Inspections Department and Johnston County Department of Social Services were notified.
Building inspectors condemned the home.
Social workers are assisting the mother and children with a new place to live. The mother was not criminally charged.
“In the normal performance of their duties, our Narcotics Detectives are accustomed to encountering difficult and dangerous situations; however, when their investigation leads them to discovering innocent children living in these horrible and unsanitary conditions, it takes a special toll on these investigators,” said Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell.
“I really appreciate the hard work of our Narcotics Detectives, and the great working relationships we have with other agencies that assist us in our investigations, condemning these homes and assisting us in protecting innocent children,” Sheriff Bizzell added.
Agents arrested Willie Lee Williams, age 47, of Benson at the scene for felony probation violation, possession of methamphetamine, and possession marijuana.
William Glenn Barefoot, age 43, of Benson was arrested Monday and charged with possession with intent to manufacture sell or deliver marijuana, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling place for a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
A neighbor, who wished not to be identified, said they were relieved to see law enforcement at the E. Holmes Street property. “I’m glad. Its been a problem. There are meth-heads over there all the time. You know something ain’t right when they come out of the house at two in the morning to cut grass.”
Benson Police assisted with the service of the search warrant.

Prayers for the kids bc after all they are the ones being affected by all of this! Look @ how nasty that house is!!! Kids who have this kid of lifestyle prefer being @ school away from all this nasty mess. Get those piece of trash out the streets.

But yet DSS is finding the mother a new place to live & with those poor children. She should never be allowed to see those children again. Those children did not ask for this but obviously she did.
Children shouldn’t be allowed with the mother at this point either! That house should have been cleaned by her as a mother animal mess on the floor shows in itself her character because as a mom that’s pure nasty!! DSS needs to get it together I’ve known of this family for many years, she’s NOT a saint by no means!! I’m so fed up with how these drugged up ones get a slap on the back- I left a domestic situation with a husband on drugs and who on video threatened my life and could never get outside help!! On my own I took my kids and started our life over- new car, new house and all even being the only provider of my house hold and worked and in school! I didn’t look back- it didn’t go on in my house or did my house look anything like that but I wasn’t gonna be treated bad in front of my kids either and put up with the side effects of his habit! She could have got out… She could have been a decent mom and put her kids First!! She could have Cleaned!!! DSS do better!!! The system is broken all the way around!!
The mother has no business caring for those children. She allowed them to live in filth she was too lazy to clean and hid drugs in their room! She shouldn’t be allowed within a mile of those kids! No excuses! Hundreds of bats exiting the eves at dusk – for years! The town was aware, their reply they’re ’working In it!’ Years! When they tear that place down there’s going to be rodents and roaches all over the neighborhood.

Is anyone besides me wondering why a home so close to the town hall and the police department was able to sell drugs? Why isn’t the town or the police department doing anything? I mean that’s just a waste of the high taxes and utility bill we pay as a resident of this horrible little town. This has been happening for year yet not a single soul of the town or police department are doing anything besides wasting our tax dollars.
It could have something to do with the inability for law enforcement to conduct illegal searches or seizures without reasonable suspicion. Unfortunately mowing your lawn at 2 in the morning is not reasonable suspicion. With small town resources, perhaps you could camp out on the sidewalk of suspected drug houses to assist law enforcement with collecting evidence so they can raid more houses.

Steve has been proactive. You must be the guy who wants to be Sheriff using this name to make Steve look bad. The fact is, Steve has been the best Sheriff in the State. I want to commend the LEO’s involved in this case. The one thing I do not understand is as to why the mother was not charged as well.

Sadly this home was very well known with the community and the people living there . His mom , Mrs. **** lived there with them and was mistreated on many levels until she was placed elsewhere . Mr. Barefoot always stated “ he was untouchable with the Police “ glad his untouchable card ran out !!! The mother **** is just as bad as him and has a record . Sad for the kids but for the mom – she needs to be behind bars too !! Social services has been there multiple times !!! One day maybe my neighbor right outside of Benson town limits will run out of being untouchable !! I mean she tells everyone she is because she has connections with a magistrate in Joco and yes I have recently seen him in benson a lot !!! Traffic on our road late at night early hours of the morning!! She calls wolf and it’s always the man who they handcuff lol. Imagine a life and all you have to do is open your mouth or spread your legs !! They are all sick and need to be put u see the jail !!

His mama was never abused **** and them boys would have killed someone for abusing her she had dementia and the state did take her but not for abuse **** pushed a broom 24/7 the joco star team ramsacked house then took the pictures and called dss he took care of his kids they had bycycles and dirt bikes and fourwheelers **** worked everyday and hardly ever come out never no grass cut at 2 am

This house has been a nuisance for over 30 years. As a kid who grew up a few blocks from there, I witnessed things as a kid I shouldn’t have.

Hard to believe human beings would allow children to be raised in such an environment. What a depraved society we have become. I find it hard to believe the DSS didn’t know about these conditions but if not, they should have. If the mother of these children didn’t know these were horrible conditions, the children should be taken from the mother. There is a special place in hades reserved for people who treat the most innocent of humans this way. May Jesus help them because apparently no one else can . You cannot rehabilitate people like this.

A very, very large quantity of bats live in the attic of this house. Have for many years. Many entrance/exits are visible they use. Hopefully they can all be removed as well as rodents and other animals living about the property. Harmful, disease, and very unsanitary for nearby residents. I am glad this is finally being addressed, the entire situation. Has been going on a very long time.
There are missing facts here, and I have so many questions. Obviously, the first one is why the mother wasn’t arrested and instead given help to find housing for her with her kids? Secondly, how many neighbors or teachers reported the situation previously, and how often? What happened that finally triggered the cops to investigate? Surely, if this were going on for so long, and so visibly, the cops would have been informed and therefore obligated to look into it, especially with kids present. It’s an easy win there. Plenty of suspicion present to cover entering the premises without a warrant.
Exactly! And has been a very long disgusting time. Many complaints have been made verbally and written. Unfortunately never addressed just told “ It’s a work in progress”. Makes no sense what so ever why this took so da*n long. Many drug addicted people at the house and living in vehicles weeks on end periodically for years. People throwing huge tires and trash all over having rage fits talking to themselves. Very scary being a neighbor to them. I SURE HOPE this place is torn down ASAP. Not months or years as been dealing with that Horrific mess so long already.
As a friend of the father mother and children of this family for over 30 + years this is nonsense.. do you people understand that this was a “raid” ..by the sheriff Dept… The house was not trashed like that before the raid why not take before and after pictures…these parents absolutely did not live like that .. when they raid someones house they look and trash the whole place.. which is exactly what happened here .. they are trying to run these people down like they are monsters which they are far from .. this is nothing but slander for this family to make it look like something they are not . Yes this house is very old over 100 years old to be exact and does have a very long history but has nothing to do with today and who lives there now . Dss is not about to do anything. All they keep saying is reunification! We have gone through this with my grandson. We were at every court date, yet ny daughter and her drugged out boyfriend wouldn’t show up and they would continue it! And if he did show up it was because he is locked up at the time of court! 2yrs and they haven’t done anything the judge told either of them and they are homeless. Living in the woods in a tent by days inn. He is a drug addict abusing her and several police reports and interactions. But what does dss say. Thue have the rights as parents.
