The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents that their name is being used in a widespread telephone scam.
Someone has been calling citizens in Johnston County claiming to be with the sheriff’s office. They even use the name of two deputies who actually work with the agency.
The caller claims that you either failed to report to jury duty or they have a warrant out for your arrest. In both cases they claim you must send a Western Union money order or gift card immediately to avoid being arrested.
Two similar incidents occurred in October.
Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said the calls this month are more frequent and widespread.
“The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for money for a criminal charge to be dropped,” Captain Caldwell told WTSB. “Never give anyone money over the phone, especially if they ask for payment in gift cards or Western Union. It is an absolute scam.”
The suspects behind the scam sound authoritative and convincing.
