Smithfield Police and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office are investigating apparent unrelated shootings. Both incidents occurred on Friday.
Around 12:15am, police said someone fired at least 5 rounds from a 40 caliber handgun into a home in the 300 block of Flowers Street in West Smithfield. Four people were inside the home but no one was struck. Police said the bullets damaged a door and interior wall. Captain R. Sheppard said the shots were fired from the roadway. Officers don’t know if the suspect was standing in the roadway or was in a vehicle when the shots were fired.
Around 5:00pm Friday, Johnston County deputies responded to a home in the 200 block of Montgomery Heights Road outside of Selma. A 67 year-old woman was burning leaves in her backyard when she heard 6 shots fired from a silver passenger car stopped in front of the residence. Her 68 year-old husband was inside the home at the time. The victim said the shots sounded like automatic gunfire. The bullets damaged a window but no injuries were reported.
