The driver of a stolen car led police and troopers on a lengthy chase that reached speeds up to 100 MPH Saturday afternoon in Johnston County that resulted in a violent crash causing a patrol car and the fleeing vehicle to overturn in a ditch.
Around 1:00pm, a woman called the Wake County Sheriff’s Office saying someone had stolen her Acura passenger car and she was following the vehicle. Clayton Police spotted the stolen car on US 70 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver sped away and during a chase struck a second vehicle on US 70 Business near US 70 Bypass.
Johnston County troopers joined the chase as it continued down US 70 then onto Buffalo Road where the driver struck another car near Byrd Road. The pursuit then turned onto Highway 42 East. At the intersection of Highway 42 and Highway 222, the speeding driver attempted to turn onto Highway 222 but missed the turn and collided with the front left side of a marked Highway Patrol cruiser sending both vehicles into a ditch where they overturned.
The driver of the fleeing car, 17 year-old Kalaya Amil Alman of Middlesex and a passenger, Keily Rachel Rubio, 17, of Knightdale were taken to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield for minor injuries. The trooper sustained a minor hand injury while attempting to exit the overturned patrol car. He was treated and released at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.
