BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Campbell senior Phil Simpson has been named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

In his first start of the 2019 season, Simpson pitched 5.0 shutout innings, fanning three batters while allowing no walks in Campbell’s series finale win over Fairfield.

The Holly Springs, N.C. native sat the Stags down in order in the first and fifth innings. Over his five innings of work, he allowed just six baserunners by way of six singles. Only two Stags were able to get into scoring position against Simpson.

This is the first weekly Big South award of Simpson’s career and second for the Fighting Camels this season as Landry Moore was named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 25.

The Camels are set to embark on a five-game road stretch in Virginia, beginning with a midweek matchup at Old Dominion on Tuesday, Mar. 5. Campbell will then travel to William & Mary for its first weekend road series of the year. The weekend tilt begins Friday with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
