Sleeping Teen Killed In Early Morning Drive-By Shooting

ERWIN – A Harnett County high school senior was shot and killed while sleeping this morning.  Authorities said the incident appears to be a drive-by shooting.

Around 12:28am today (Monday), the Harnett County 911 Center received an emergency call reporting a person had been shot inside a home in the 2700 block of Bunnlevel-Erwin Road near Erwin.  Harnett County deputies arrived on the scene and discovered 18 year-old Iyania Rhone suffering from a gunshot wound to the pelvic area.

Deputies said Rhone, a senior at Harnett Central High School, was asleep inside the residence when an unknown suspect or suspects fired multiple rounds in the residence.  Investigators said it appears the suspect or suspects were in a vehicle and were firing from the roadway.

Iyania Rhone was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Hospital where she died.

Catherine Jones, Principal at Harnett Central High School said, “Our school is saddened by the loss of one of our students, Iyania Rhone.  She finished in December as a mid-year graduate and would have received her diploma at our graduation in June.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.”

According to a news release, authorities said the investigation was in its early stages and no additional details are being released at this time.
