Former Johnston County Commissioner and State Senator Fred Smith of Clayton won election Tuesday night to the District 1 seat on the Board of Commissioners.
Smith, a Republican, defeated Democratic challenger Justin D. King.
In unofficial returns, Smith received 60,692 votes and King 43,154 votes.
“I am grateful that the voters of Johnston County have entrusted me with a seat on the Board of Commissioners,” Mr. Smith said Tuesday night. “As a Commissioner, I pledge to focus on ensuring that Johnston County focuses on core priorities, updates our comprehensive plan to guide future growth, keeps taxes as low as possible, and continues to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family. I’m ready to get to work.”
Mr. Smith will replace Commissioner Jeff Carver of Clayton. Carver served on the board 18 years. He did not seek reelection this year.
