SMITHFIELD – The Town of Smithfield had adopted its first ever Drone Policy. The Town Council unanimously approved a drone policy presented by the Parks and Recreation Department.
The policy establishes guidelines for taking off and landing of drones in Town parks. The policy promotes safe flying and limits the spaces where drones over 0.88 pounds can take off and land in town parks.
Smithfield Parks and Recreation Director Gary Johnson told The Johnston County Report, “Drone use in the parks is light compared to other activities and uses of the parks but drones are trending and we expect to see more use over time. The Drone Policy for parks was designed to keep other users safe, as well as the pilot, by providing specific space for taking off and landing of drones within the parks system.”
Those found in violation of the drone guidelines may be asked to leave the park and have their drone privileges revoked.
Park visitors who see unsafe practices are encouraged to notify parks and rec staff or contact the Smithfield Police Department.
