The Smithfield Town Council has approved a request from the County of Johnston to annex a 25.39 acre tract of land that will be future the site of a new Johnston County Detention Center.
Johnston County petitioned the Town of Smithfield in January to consider annexation of the site on Highway 70 East at Yelverton Grove Road. At their February meeting, no one spoke in opposition of the request during a public hearing.
The noncontiguous annexation will allow the County facility to receive police and fire protection. Trash and yard debris pickup are not services provided to Institutional properties. Code enforcement will also be provided without any additional cost.
Town Manager Mike Scott said the Sheriff’s Office has agreed to handle all law enforcement matters that occur on the property, meaning there will be little additional demand on the Smithfield Police Department.
In a motion by Councilman David Barbour and seconded by Councilman Roger Wood, the board voted unanimously to approve to annexation request.
