A Smithfield business was broken into early this morning (Thursday). The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2:36am burglar alarm at East Coast Equipment located at 2783 Highway 70 Business East.
Deputies arrived and discovered a fence had been damaged and a John Deere Gator utility vehicle had been moved from within the fence to outside the entry gate. The suspect or suspects fled before they could steal the utility vehicle. Damage to the fence was estimated at $1,000 and damage to the Gator was placed at $1,000.
Authorities said they recovered some evidence left at the scene. No arrests have been made.
