SMITHFIELD – A long-time employee of the Smithfield Fire Department celebrated his retirement day on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Old friends, co-workers and community leaders came together to offer Captain Bentley Powell their best wishes as he completed his final day of twenty years as a professional firefighter in Smithfield.

Former co-workers and friends shared a meal as they told stories of Powell’s early days in the heating and air conditioning business where he proved himself a valuable asset, and of fire service stories throughout his long career.

Powell is not about to give up his chosen career of public service just to sit back and watch the grass grow. He will just be reporting for duty at a different fire house where he will remain the Fire Chief of the Wilson’s Mills Volunteer Fire Department. He will now dedicate even more of his time serving his friends and neighbors in the Wilson’s Mills community.
