A 48 year-old Smithfield man was taken into custody inside Wal-Mart on North Brightleaf Boulevard on Tuesday.
Around 7:55am, Smithfield Police said Curtis Paul Edwards of East Church Street walked into Wal-Mart and removed a $69 vacuum cleaner from the shelf. Edwards allegedly did not pay for the item, instead he took it to the customer service desk and asked for store credit. He was given a Wal-Mart gift card for the item.
Police arrived and detained Edwards who was later charged with obtaining property by false pretenses, a felony. He was transported to the Johnston County Jail and given a $25,000 bond. The vacuum was returned to Wal-Mart.
