A Smithfield man was shot and killed while in Benson on Sunday night.
Benson Police said they responded to a shots fired call at 7:36pm at the Raymond Sanders apartment complex on Barefoot Street.
The first officer on the scene found the victim, Jason Audas Rivera, 40, of Garner Street, Smithfield on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. EMS and first responders tried to save Rivera’s life but he died at the scene.
Police said Rivera and the suspect, Michael Trism Fenix Willis, 22, of Monique Road, Lucama, were in the same apartment unit when they began arguing. The verbal altercation became physical. That’s when Willis allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Rivera once in the chest.
Rivera was able to flee outside the apartment where he collapsed.
