Smithfield Native Inducted Into High School Hall Of Fame

A Smithfield native has been inducted into the J.H. Rose High School Hall of Fame.

Elizabeth Upton, the daughter of Joyce and Steve Upton of Smithfield, was honored during a Hall of Fame banquet held at the Pitt County School on Oct. 15th.

Elizabeth began her teaching career at J.H. Rose in Greenville in 1987. From 1987 to 2011, she led the Men’s Tennis Team to an overall record of 298 wins and 60 loss, including 13 Conference Championships and Coach of the Year honors 12 times.

At the same time, she led the Women’s Teams to an overall record of 329-65, including 14 Conference Championships and Coach of the Year honors 15 times.

Elizabeth graduated in 1981 from Smithfield Selma High School, in 1985 from UNC Wilmington, and in 1987 from East Carolina University with a Masters Degree in Physical Education and a second Masters in Administration.    

She plans to retire from teaching and coaching in January 2016.
