Smithfield To Start Annual Chlorine Treatment Of Water System Feb. 26

SMITHFIELD — The Town of Smithfield will begin its annual free chlorine treatment of the municipal water system later this month as part of routine maintenance designed to maintain water quality and reliability.

Town officials said the process will start Feb. 26 and continue through April 2. During this period, the Water Filtration Plant and Water Distribution Department will temporarily switch from chloramines to free chlorine to help clean the water distribution system and reduce the potential for bacterial growth inside water lines.

Water utilities commonly use chlorine burnouts as a preventative maintenance measure to maintain system performance, officials said.

Residents may notice a temporary change in the taste or smell of their water, or mild discoloration during the treatment period. Town officials emphasized that the water will remain safe to drink and that boiling or special precautions are not required.

Customers experiencing changes are encouraged to flush faucets or plumbing fixtures for several minutes to clear water lines.

Officials noted that residents with aquariums, dialysis equipment or other sensitive water uses should follow their normal precautions when using chlorinated water.

Residents with questions can contact the Town of Smithfield Water Filtration Plant during regular business hours at 919-934-2661.
