A Smithfield woman died and another woman was hospitalized with serious injuries following a Thursday evening crash near Angier.
Around 6 p.m. Candice Michelle Garner, 40, died when the 1996 Honda passenger car she was driving west on Chalybeate Springs Road collided head-on with a 2007 Ford SUV driven by 73-year-old Marie Repine McNeill of Angier. The collision occurred after Garner’s vehicle traveled left of the centerline, according to a North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesperson. Both vehicles came to rest at the point of impact near Atkins Road.
Garner was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel and McNeill was taken by ambulance to Wake Med in Raleigh.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, and speed and alcohol were not additional factors in the crash.
Chalybeate Springs Road was temporarily blocked between Atkins Road and downtown Angier while crews were working to clear the scene.
