GOLDSBORO – A Smithfield woman died in a single vehicle traffic accident Monday afternoon. Goldsboro Police said the accident happened at 5:45pm on E. Ash Street at N. Center Street.
Lee Edgar Grubbs of Creech’s Mill Road, Smithfield was operating a 2014 Toyota SUV when it ran off the roadway and collided with a Duke Energy utility pole at the intersection.
Mr. Grubbs sustained non-life threatening injuries. His wife, a front seat passenger, Brenda Murphy Grubbs, died as a result of her injuries.
Police estimated the Toyota was traveling at 60 mph in a 35 mph zone when it struck the utility pole, according to a accident report.
Mr. Grubbs was cited for failure to maintain lane control and exceeding the speed limit.
