SMITHFIELD – Students were briefly evacuated from Smithfield Selma High School after approximately two dozen students were exposed to pepper spray.
Around 11:00am Wednesday, a pepper spray device was reportedly discharged by a student inside a classroom. Numerous fire and EMS units responded to assess the situation and provide care to students who were exposed.
After a short period of time, the school continued with its normal daily routine.
Smithfield Police Chief P.R. Hedrick said the incident remains under investigation. Chief Hedrick said it appears no one was targeted and may have been an accidental discharge of pepper spray.
