Johnston County Commissioner April Stephens won election to the District 1 commission seat she was appointed to earlier this year.
In April 2022, Mrs. Stephens was appointed to the seat after former Commissioner Larry Wood resigned suddenly in February 2022. Mr. Wood’s term did not expire until 2024 and a special election for the seat was held Tuesday.
Stephens (R) was challenged for the seat by Evelyn L. Sanders (D). In unofficial returns, Stephens garnered 64 percent of the ballots with 46,765 votes to 28,121, or 36 percent, for Sanders.
Stephens is a local business owner and realtor.
