Strong Winds, Cold Wind Chills Forecast For Johnston County This Weekend

SMITHFIELD — Johnston County residents should prepare for strong winds and sharply colder conditions this weekend as a Wind Advisory takes effect early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory from 4 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday for much of central North Carolina, including Johnston County and surrounding areas of the northern and central Coastal Plain.

Forecasters say northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph and isolated gusts possibly nearing 50 mph behind a passing cold front.

The gusty conditions could blow around unsecured outdoor objects, bring down tree limbs and lead to scattered power outages, according to the advisory. Drivers — particularly those operating high-profile vehicles — are urged to use extra caution due to potentially difficult travel conditions.

In addition to strong winds, colder air moving into the region is expected to produce very cold wind chills through the weekend. Early morning wind chill values Saturday and Sunday could fall into the single digits to middle teens.

Meteorologists indicated that a Cold Weather Advisory may be issued if conditions warrant, particularly early Sunday when the coldest wind chills are expected.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, remain alert for changing weather conditions and monitor forecasts for updates.
