A local high school student said she was raped while on school grounds. WTSB News has confirmed Smithfield Police are investigating a report filed on Monday by a female student at Neuse Charter School.
The sex offense is reported to have occurred on the school campus at 909 Booker Dairy Road in Smithfield in mid-April but was not reported by the victim until this week.
Smithfield Police Captain T.S. Choe said the case has been assigned to a detective and is currently under investigation. A police report indicated that the victim did know the suspect.
Officials did not release any other details including why the victim waited to report the alleged assault or if the incident happened during school hours.
Neuse Charter School Board Chairman Tony Gupton released a statement to WTSB News Wednesday afternoon. “We have been made aware of a matter with a student. We had not been made aware of the specific incident or alleged actions prior to today’s report. Neuse Charter intends to assist and support the investigation and to take any necessary actions.”
