Students Injured In School Bus Accident

A Johnston County school bus was involved in a collision with a car about two miles from school campus Friday afternoon.

Bus 177 had just departed from Meadow School with 37 students on board when it was involved in a collision with a green Ford Mustang at the intersection of Highway 96 South at Godwin Lake Road.
After the collision the bus ran off the right side of the roadway and came to rest against a tree.

Johnston County Public School officials said 15 of the 37 students on the bus sustained minor injuries.  Ambulances transported 7 of those students to area hospitals.  There were two occupants in the Mustang, a 17 year-old driver and 13 year-old passenger. They were also injured and transported to the hospital.

Dozens of paramedics, fire fighters, first responders, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers converged on the scene after the 3:20pm crash.  Highway 96 was shut down for about two hours following the collision.

Initial reports indicate the driver of the Mustang may have failed to stop for a stop sign and struck the bus in the side. The NC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
