Expired: Suspect Charged With Firing Gun Into Occupied Car

Law enforcement officers are still trying to understand the motive for an alleged gunman who fired a gun into a car occupied by two people Wednesday morning in southern Johnston County.

Around 12:10am, officers responded to the shooting in the 12000 block of Highway 50 South.

The two victims, a 24 year-old Burlington woman and a 21 year-old Smithfield man said they had borrowed a car from the suspects mother and had returned the vehicle to her driveway. As they were leaving in another vehicle, the woman’s son, Braxton James Hoover, 25, of Newton Grove allegedly came outside and fired a shot into the vehicle. Luckily, the two occupants were not hit.

They fled from the area and contacted authorities.

A short time later, deputies located Hoover and took him into custody. He is facing a long list of charges including assault with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, injury to property and communicating threats.  Hoover was also wanted at the time of the incident for failing to appear in Duplin County on a misdemeanor marijuana paraphernalia possession charge.
