A gunman who reportedly shot and killed a Greensboro, NC police officer Monday morning was apprehended after a multi-county chase with Johnston County deputies.
Greensboro police officer Michael Horan was killed after responding to a Food Lion store following a report of a man with a gun at the business on Lawndale Drive. After Officer Horan arrived, shots were fired and he was killed.
Law enforcement agencies began searching for the vehicle the suspect was driving. Approximately two hours later, a Johnston County deputy spotted the vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 outside of Benson. The driver, the alleged murder suspect, refused to pull over and accelerated to speeds of approximately 115 miles per hour.
The high speed chase continued eastbound on I-40 into Sampson and Duplin counties where state troopers, Sampson and Duplin county deputies assisted.
While traveling on Interstate 40 near Warsaw in Duplin County, a state trooper performed a PIT maneuver ending the chase. The suspect surrendered and is now in custody.
The Greensboro Police Department said circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated.
Officer Horan was hired by the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and was described as an excellent law enforcement officer.
The identity of the suspect was not immediately released.
