Suspect Turns Himself In Following Deadly Shooting Of Child

CLAYTON – The search for a suspect accused in the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old child ended Monday morning when 20-year-old Ty’ryn Anthony Zah’rel Washington of Kenly surrendered to authorities.

Clayton Police confirmed Washington turned himself in this morning after investigators issued a warrant for manslaughter. He is now in custody as detectives continue to piece together what unfolded inside a crowded apartment.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. Friday, November 28, when officers responded to a report of a fight involving weapons in the 300 block of Commodore Street. Police say several people fled as they arrived, while others stayed behind to describe the disturbance.

Moments later, officers heard another commotion nearby and saw people running from an apartment in the 400 block of Commodore Street, shouting that someone had been shot. Inside, officers found a 12-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound. Johnston County EMS attempted lifesaving measures, but the child died.

Investigators believe 20 to 30 people were inside the apartment at the time. Witnesses told police that as some individuals attempted to hide weapons from officers, one of the firearms discharged. Early on, it was unclear who fired the shot.

After additional interviews and evidence review, investigators concluded Washington was reportedly holding the weapon when it went off.

Police say more information will be released as the investigation continues.

  1. Clayton has gone so far downhill, absolutely a dump now! Sad to see but that’s what you get when you vote wrong and let half the country move here with there views, the ones they ran from..

  2. “…investigators concluded Washington was reportedly holding the weapon when it went off.”

    Pro tip:

Guns go off when the trigger is pulled.

They do NOT “go off” without someone pulling the trigger.

  3. So, there was a fight involving weapons at one apartment, and while investigating that , there was a shooting in an adjacent apartment.

    Nice neighborhood.

  4. ABC11 has learned that Washington has three other pending cases against him in Johnston County and was out of jail on bond when Kyrell was shot and killed.

Washington posted a $2,000 bond in July. In that case, Selma Police said Washington was “pointing a gun” and “knowingly” helped someone “escaping arrest.” I’d like to know what JoCo judge let him off with $2,000 bond

    • I would as well and it’s high time we hold judges accountable for the actions of the people they let out on bond. Maybe they won’t let them walk with a hand slap. 2,000 bond is the equivalent of $200 for a bail bondsman.

  5. I don’t get it every one makes mistakes but this guy is a criminal and they just gave him a slap on the wrist 50,000 dollar bond for killing a child ima say this I was arrested like ten years ago for stealing gas and i was under a 60,000 dollar bond make it make sense

  6. My heart is so broken and saddened to read this story. Do you think it’s possible to take a step backwards and be more compassionate for others? We should feel for both families, who have suffered and lost their children. I may not have known either of them, but I am still deeply sorry for both of their families.
