Smithfield Police are trying to identify two people who stole two laptop computers from Walmart on N. Brightleaf Boulevard over-the-weekend.
The suspects asked to see two laptops and agreed to purchase them.
While the black male suspect was at a checkout counter making the purchase, the black female suspect diverted the cashiers attention. While the cashier was distracted, the black male reached over the counter and depressed a button on the cash register indicating the sale had been completed. Only later did the clerk realize the sale was incomplete and notify management.
Police Captain R. Sheppard said a similar incident is under investigation in Harnett County.
