Todd P. Sutton announced Thursday he would be a candidate for the Johnston County School Board.
Sutton, 42, is originally from Henderson but has been a resident of Johnston County for just over 19 years. While attending Barton College, Sutton met his wife, Lynda Renfrow Sutton. She is the daughter of Charles L. Renfrow, Pastor of Micro Original Free Will Baptist Church and the late Gaye Batten Renfrow of Kenly, who also taught in the Johnston County School system for many years.
The Sutton’s reside in the Stancil’s Chapel community near Kenly with their two children, Noah age 16, and Raegan age 11. They attend Bethany Missionary Baptist Church where he serves on the Deacon Board and teachers Sunday School. Sutton also serves on the Glendale-Kenly Advisory Council as chairman, the Johnston County Education Foundation, and as President of the North Johnston High School Panther Club.
“I have a vested interest in the Johnston County School System,” Sutton told WTSB News. “My wife and brother in law are educators in Johnston County Schools and my sister in law is a school nurse. Lynda’s family has a long line of educators that believes in the public school system. We both have family members in different areas of the county that either attend or teach in Johnston County Public Schools.”
“As a parent of a high functioning autistic child, I have experienced the stance the school system takes on bullying and have been very pleased with the support from the staff and administration,” Sutton said.
“Our current school board has been very proactive in educational policies. I would like to continue the legacy that has been built and keep the strong positive relationship between the school board, superintendent, cabinet and teachers,” Sutton said. “I plan to be an advocate for the students and a voice for the parents in Johnston County.”
Sutton plans to file on December 1st, 2015 the opening day of the filing period for the 2016 elections.
Sutton is a territory manager for Zylera Pharmaceuticals. He graduated in 1991 from Northern Vance Senior High. He attended Barton College from 1991 to 1993, and East Carolina University from 1993 to 1995.
