Johnston County School Board member Todd Sutton of Kenly announced Thursday he would not be running for a seat next year on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners.
Mr. Sutton had been weighing his options on a possible run for the District 1 seat currently held by Commissioner Jeff Carver of Clayton. Carver was elected to District 1 in December 2003. The seat is up for election in 2020 for a four year term.
Sutton told JoCoReport he made the decision not to run for the County Commissioner seat after discussing it with his family and also considering the amount of time he is away due to travel requirements for his employer.
“At this time I cannot commit to run for another office and I will continue to focus on the Johnston County Board of Education,” Sutton said.
Sutton was appointed to the Johnston County School Board in January 2017 to fill out the unexpired term of Chairman Larry Strickland who won a seat in December 2016 to the NC House District 28.
In December 2018, Sutton won election to a four year term on the school board. Sutton’s wife is a teacher with Johnston County Schools. They have two children.
