FOUR OAKS – Traffic was backed up for several miles Monday (today) following a single vehicle accident on Interstate 95 south of Four Oaks. Around 11:00am, a black GMC SUV was traveling southbound on I-95 at the 84 mile marker when the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. The SUV traveled several hundred feet on the shoulder before traveling into the woods and overturning against a tree.
Five people were in the overturned vehicle. Four were trapped inside. The Four Oaks Fire Department extricated the victims before they were placed on stretchers and taken to awaiting ambulances. The injured were transported to area hospitals. None of the injuries were life threatening.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the State Highway Patrol.
The collision closed one southbound lane, causing traffic to back up four miles before both lanes could be reopened and the scene cleared.
