Tanker Leak Temporarily Closes I-95 Exit Ramp

SELMA – A tractor trailer hauling “black oil” leaked when it exited northbound Interstate 95 at US 70 (97 mile marker) in Selma, Monday morning.

The slick oil came from a port on top of the trailer. The exit was closed completely until the NC DOT was able to sand the slick area. One lane remained closed pending cleanup of the spill by an environmental cleanup company.

Traffic began flowing, although restricted to only one lane, just before noon.

NC DOT and Selma Fire remained on the scene.

A cleanup crew at the scene would not disclose what the type of oil product the tanker was hauling.

  1. Thats a little scary when the cleanup crew would not disclose what the type of oil product the tanker was hauling. I would think the public has the right to know. It would be one thing for them to say they do not know what type of oil but to know and not to tell. For all I know it could have been radioactive?????

  2. The Truck driver was in violation, no plaque cards. If empty, yes, it is OK to run without, but having spillage over the top, means top cap was not secure and if loaded as it appears to be,: Where are the plaque cards?

  3. They said it was hauling black oil then they are saying clean up crew would not say what was in it!

  4. Looks like the driver didn’t ensure that the dome lids were secure. It was probably waste oil-that’s mostly what Noble Oil hauls. Looking at the slick alongside the trailer, it appears that it started leaking during transit.
