Teen Cited In School Bus Crash

A teenage driver has been cited by police for causing a two vehicle accident involving a Johnston County school bus.

The accident happened at 6:55am Monday on Booker Dairy Road at Eden Drive near Smithfield Selma High School.

According to a Smithfield Police accident report, 16 year-old Kaitlyn Marie Williams of Smithfield was operated a 2001 Mazda passenger car. Police said Williams told them she had just completed a cell phone call to a relative and went to place the phone down. When she looked back up she did not have time to avoid striking the school bus from behind. Williams was not hurt.

No one on board bus 217 was injured.  The bus was being operated by Crystal McKnight of Selma.

Damage to the Mazda was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the bus was placed at $500.

Williams was cited for failing to reduce speed.
