Teen Struck Near Entrance To School

A teenager was still hospitalized on Friday one day after being hit by a car while trying to cross Booker Dairy Road near the entrance to Neuse Charter School.

The 13 year-old Clayton youth was standing on the shoulder of Booker Dairy Road around 4:25pm Thursday when she darted into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by Amanda Snyder, 26, of Selma.  Snyder told Smithfield Police she was unable to avoid striking the child but managed to slow down to approximately 15mph before her 2009 GMC truck struck the child. A witness said the impact threw the child into the air before she landing on the pavement.

The juvenile told police she did not see the approaching truck before attempting to cross the roadway. The driver of the truck will not face any charges.

The 13 year-old was taken to Wake Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
